A man was seriously injured after he lost his footing and slid 100 metres down a rugged slope on Mt Ruapehu while trying to retrieve his son's ski.

He suffered serious back injuries and had to be rescued from the harsh off-piste terrain.

The incident happened when he was boarding off-piste with his son, who fell and lost a ski down the mountainside.

While trying to get the ski the father lost his footing.

A passing skier noticed the lone teenager and investigated before raising the alarm with the Turoa Ski Patrol.

The patrol were able to stabilise the father at the scene before putting him on a stretcher.

He was then airlifted to the Turoa Ski field medical centre and assessed before being taken to hospital where he is in a serious but stable condition.

He was flown to Palmerston North hospital.
