Police have located a grenade inside the remains of a burnt house in which a man died after an armed offenders standoff at a Northland property.
Police received reports of a firearm being discharged from a property at Mangamuka, south of Kaitaia, about 2.30pm yesterday after a dispute over a trespass matter.
The AOS was called in and began negotiating with the occupier of the address.
About 12.30am today a fire was noticed inside the house.
The AOS attempted to enter the address to rescue the occupant.
However, they had to pull back due to several explosions.
The Fire Service attended and put out the fire, allowing police to enter the house.
They found a body inside about 4.45am.
"We sent two fire service appliances and a rural tanker," Allan Kerrisk, Fire Service area commander, said. "On arrival we liaised with the police and the property was well involved."
Police have cordoned off the property and are carrying out inquiries to ascertain the circumstances around the fire and the man's death.
His name will not be released until next of kin have been notified.
