Work and Income and ACC offices in Canterbury have been closed after today's fatal shooting.
The Ministry of Social Development Chief Executive Brendan Boyle said all Canterbury Work and Income (Winz) offices, including Timaru, would be closed until further notice following this morning's shooting at Winz in Ashburton.
"We are all shocked by the news of this morning's incident at the Ashburton Work and Income office. The police are handling this serious situation.
"What I can say is that we will be there for our colleagues to support them as they come to terms with what has happened," Boyle said.
The Public Service Association (PSA) said it represented eight members at the Ashburton Work and Income office, and another eight at Ashburton Child, Youth and Family in the same building.
They had no information at this stage about whether any of their members were among the victims, national secretary Richard Wagstaff said.
"Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy," he said.
"We don't know what the cause is, but we will be supporting our members from Ashburton Work and Income at this terrible time.
Wagstaff said he hoped police could bring the shooter to justice.
"Nobody should go to work in the morning without returning home that same day."
