TV3 is high flier at Qantas TV Awards

OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE: TV3 was one of the major winners at this year's Qantas television awards with wins in drama and news categories.

It was TV3 all the way at the Qantas Television Awards last night as the station took out all the top prizes scooping the pool for both news and drama.

On the red carpet in Auckland in a dusky pink Liz Mitchell-designed gown Robyn Malcolm admitted to "butterflies" but went on to win Best TV drama actress for her role as Cheryl West in Outrageous Fortune.

The TV3 show was a notable winner on the night, also netting awards for best drama, best actor for Antony Starr, best script for James Griffin and editing.

The public also gave the show the big thumbs up, awarding it the people's choice award.

In news and current affairs, 3 News won the best news trophy while 3 News political editor Duncan Garner was voted TV journalist of the year.

The Wellingtonian also won the award for best news reporting and his wife, Mihingarangi Forbes, took out the award for the best daily current affairs story for her work on Campbell Live.


60 Minutes won best current affairs series and a 3 News special "Let Us Spray" was investigation of the year.

Affable Close Up host Mark Sainsbury took out the highly competitive best presenter category.

 Judges said he had a "direct and engaging on air manner" and was "sensitive, strong and deft in controlling the panel and debate".

However, one of the most famous moustaches in New Zealand wasn't quite so lucky, with the judges adding the "hirsute hounder could do with a shave".

TVNZ's flagship current affairs show Sunday won awards for weekly current affairs reporting, camera work and editing.

Cult comedy show Pulp Sport took the comedy prize, while Dancing with the Stars topped the entertainment category.

Fair Go took information programme honours, Let's Get Inventin' the children's prize and coverage of the America's Cup in Valencia was best in sport.

Maori TV scored best reality with Marae DIY.

3 News' awards success is also reflected by viewing figures.

Latest AGB Nielsen data for October shows in TV3's target demographic of 18 to 49-year-olds, 3 News had 38 per cent of audience share, 10 per cent more than One News.

 While in the One News demographic of viewers, aged 25-54, 3 News had 37.6 per cent of the audience, compared to One News's 34.3 per cent share.
