One dead, nine hurt in horror car crash
Eight people are in a critical condition after a head-on crash in Waikato in which one person was killed.
The person who died was in a car that collided head-on with a van yesterday.
Inspector Gary Hill said the accident happened at 2.45pm in Otorohanga Rd near Kihikihi, south of Te Awamutu.
Waikato Hospital spokeswoman Mary Anne Gill said the other occupant of the car and seven people from the van were in a critical condition.
A seven-year-old who was also in the van was in a less serious condition.
The van was carrying Chinese people from Auckland, possibly a family group, Ms Gill said. Their ages ranged from seven to 59.
She said a Cantonese interpreter had been brought in because some of the injured did not speak much English. The seven-year-old spoke good English and was providing information to staff.
The hospital had experience in such situations, she said.
In February 17 people were injured when their bus left the road and slid on its side for 20 metres near Tokoroa.
The 15 Korean tourists, the driver and tour guide were treated at Tokoroa and Waikato hospitals.
