One killed, two badly injured in crash

One person is dead and two seriously injured following a crash between a tour bus and a mini-van yesterday.

The accident happened about 3.50pm on the Milford Road Highway.

One person died at the scene and two others were airlifted to Dunedin Hospital. One person was believed to be in a critical condition and the other serious.

All three were believed to have been travelling in the mini-van.

Inspector Doug Parker, of the police southern communications centre, said the bus passengers had been taken to Queenstown to give statements.

Police were expected to return to the scene today to continue their investigation.

Earlier this month, a tourist bus caught fire near the Homer Tunnel on the Milford Road. All 22 passengers were out of the bus when it caught fire on the Milford side of the tunnel.

In April 2005, a busload of schoolchildren escaped with bumps and bruises after their bus was hit by a vehicle travelling on the wrong side of the Te Anau-Milford highway.

In November 2002, a bus with 32 tourists on board caught fire in the Homer Tunnel, but all made it to safety, helped by the Christchurch bus driver Bob Kaan who later won an award for bravery.
