A Christchurch woman has been found safe after becoming separated from her friends and spending the night stuck in a Canterbury swamp.

Inspector Warren Kemp said the 19-year-old Christchurch woman was found in a forest near Waikuku north of Christchurch.

She had become separated from her companions around 5pm yesterday and was reported missing at 7.30pm. She was found by search and rescue shortly after three this morning.

Police said she had became disoriented after she ended up on her own and had walked towards lights she had seen in the distance before becoming stuck in the swamp area where police found her.

She was cold and wet but otherwise unharmed, police said.
