Falun Gong says it will defy Wellington City Council's order to remove from public gardens a banner promoting meditation sessions.
The council has told the group, which exercises every Sunday in the Botanic Gardens soundshell, to remove a banner that reads, "Falun Dafa - meditation, exercise, teaching".
But practitioner Joan Zhang said she would display the banner this Sunday and the group would continue with High Court action against the council.
It is understood that the Human Rights Commission has tried to settle the growing dispute between the council and Falun Gong members, which has included the council banning members from entering this year's Chinese New Year parade.
In a dompost.co.nz poll, 34 per cent of voters agreed with the council's stance to ban the banner, while 33 per cent disagreed and 29 per cent opposed the council's labelling of the group as political.
