North Shore City Council is mystified by the sudden appearance of 25 cattle on council land.
The animals have been found on the corner of East Coast Bays Road and Glenvar Road, a rural area past Torbay.
The cattle appear to have been dumped here, for no apparent reason and Council staff have been working throughout the morning to identify who the owners are.
The occupants of all surrounding farms do not appear to own the cattle, says a council spokesperson.
The council has borrowed a farmer's 10 acre paddock near by, to put the cattle for now, so they are able to feed on grass.
The area where they were dumped was not grassy and was unfenced. "We are lucky that we didn't have cows running all over Torbay," says the spokesperson.
The council's animal control team is on the case, and they have been in touch with the police, in case this is a theft.
