The Wellington Guy Fawkes waterfront display was combined with all the fun of the fair this year.

An estimated 150,000 people enjoyed carnival rides, hot dog stalls and music last night before the Pelorus Trust's 19-minute fireworks display at 9pm.

Proceeds from the Wellington City Council-sponsored pre-fireworks carnival went to Wellington Free Ambulance.

Rodney Strong, 40, was collecting funds for the cause. "People were very generous. It was a good night."

Thousands of people also gathered on New Brighton beach for the Christchurch fireworks display.

The Fire Service had a relaxed Guy Fawkes night, with less than 50 fireworks-related callouts on what is traditionally its busiest day of the year.

A northern a fire communications spokesman told NZPA firefighters had a "really quiet night", with only six callouts to incidents started by fireworks.

"And there was nothing serious, either -- no structures or anything," he said.

A central communications spokesman said they had 45 callouts in total, with about half related to fireworks.

In the South Island, only 11 of the callouts were due to fireworks, making for a very quiet night, a spokeswoman said.

Meanwhile police are still hunting $11,000 worth of fireworks stolen from the Warehouse in the Waikato town of Morrinsville.

The thieves were believed to have broken into the Waikato store premises between 9pm on Tuesday and 10am Wednesday, Constable John Grantham said.

They stole three pallets' worth of boxes of Megashot, Backyard Blast and Astro Blazer Mega Mix fireworks, he said.
