A house fire in the Wellington suburb of Newlands has now been put out.
Fire communications spokesman David Meikle said the alarm had been raised at 12.20pm by people inside the house.
Two people were reported to be in the house at the time the fire started.
Four fire engines had been sent to fight the fire which was described as significant.
There were no reports on any injuries, he said.
