Tramper's stabbing call a mystery

A call from a tramper in the Tararua Range who claimed his friend had been stabbed has left police stumped.

The 111 call, made from a cellphone at 5.20am on Thursday, first went through to the ambulance service.

The caller said that he was in the Tararuas between One Tree Hill in the Featherston area and Jumbo Hut in the Carterton area.

The caller said his friend had been stabbed and he wanted to know where the nearest hospital was. The call was forwarded to police.

Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr said the caller was reluctant to give any more detail and would not say what condition his friend was in or what had happened.

He would not even disclose exactly where in the range they were.

"We have tried every avenue," Mr Burr said. "It is all a mystery, but still quite concerning."

A check of hospitals has failed to find anyone who might have been brought in suffering from stab wounds.

Mr Burr said the call could not be dismissed.

"We are interested in hearing from anyone who may have been in the ranges during the past few days and seen someone who may have been injured.

"Perhaps a friend was due back from a tramp and hasn't turned up yet.

"We need to make sure that nothing bad has happened," he said.
