Search and rescuers carried a German tourist out of the Tararua Forest Park overnight after she hit her head and knocked herself out.
The accident happened when the 31-year-old tripped on a tree stump in the Otaki Forks area, said Sergeant Andy Brooke, of Palmerston North police.
Her companions raised the alarm at around 11.30pm but bad weather prevented a helicopter picking her up so a team went in on foot and brought her out.
She is not thought to be seriously hurt.
