One dead in crash south of Kaikoura

A person is dead and another seriously injured after a motorcycle and car collided south of Kaikoura this evening.
Emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 1 just north of Oaro just before 7pm.
A police communications spokesman confirmed a person had died but had no other details.
An ambulance communications spokesman said a Westpac Rescue helicopter was being sent from Christchurch for the seriously injured person.
Another person received minor injuries, the spokesman said.
It is not known if SH 1 was closed, but KiwiRail spokesman Nigel Parry confirmed one train near the crash scene was stopped for a short time. The crash, which was attended by police, ambulance and volunteer firefighters from Kaikoura, occured close to the main truck railway line.
