A woman had to be rescued after she broke her ankle on a North Island beach and the tide threatened to sweep her out to sea this morning.

The 54-year-old Te Kuiti woman had been walking along the turbulent shoreline at Marokopa, 65km west of Te Kuiti, when she fractured her ankle about 11.30am, Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance pilot Dan Harcourt said.

It was feared the incoming tide would overtake her, he said.

Locals helped her to the village where the helicopter picked her up and flew her to Waikato Hospital.
