A body found at the former Riding for Disabled site in Gisborne has been identified as missing man Simon Eckersley.

Police were waiting for dental records from Australia to formally identify the body but Senior Sergeant Rodger Gray said Mr Eckersley's identity was established by tattoos unique to him.

He was found by people on Sunday walking in the area.

Police were not looking for anyone in relation to the death.

The find comes more than a month after police and search and rescue volunteers scoured the outskirts of the city looking for him.

He was reported missing on October 14 after his car was abandoned at Makorori Hill lookout on the East Coast highway. There were sightings of him later back in the city.
