Malfunctioning lights at a train crossing caused major traffic delays in Wellington this morning.

The lights at the train crossing on Waterloo Quay switched on between 7.40am and 7.50am, causing a huge backlog of traffic that stretched back to Petone, police said.

The backlog had cleared by 9am.

Also this morning, a 10-year-old boy was hit by a slow moving car while crossing Steyne Ave in Porirua about 8.45am.

The boy, who was crossing the road with his mother, was checked at the scene by ambulance staff and did not need to be taken to hospital.

i have always wonder why the hell the trains are allowed to cross that road at all during peak hour traffic. there is no need for it to be done at that time and would be better delayed till say 10am...
