A man is in a serious condition in Wellington Hospital after an accident aboard a fishing boat in the Marlborough Sounds earlier this evening.

The Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called out at about 5.50pm to the boat where a 34-year-old Dunedin man had been pinned under chains and was knocked unconscious.

A paramedic was winched onto the vessel and, along with boat crew, carried the injured man to the boat's bow where the pair were winched back into the helicopter.

Paramedic Mark Bailey said "the patient is in a serious condition with throat, chest and back injuries."

The boat had been fishing in Cook Strait when the accident happened.

After the accident the captain headed for the calmer waters of Port Underwood in the sounds.
