A play performance arranged by Child, Youth and Family for foster parents and children in CYF care has caused shock after sexual themes and swear words were used.

One hundred and thirty two Wellington CYF children aged between six and 17 were treated to a performance of An Adagio Christmas at the Downstage theatre at the weekend.

The play's audience saw one one character calling another by an obscenity, and another refer to losing their virginity and miming an orgasm in a slapstick-style, Radio New Zealand reported.

Despite the audience for the play, Downstage Theatre said it left the adult themes in as it did not want to be condescending to children.

Child Youth and Family deputy chief executive Ray Smith, who was in the audience, admitted to being shocked but defended the performance.

Not all situations could be censored, he told Radio New Zealand.

Those saying that people complaining about this are PC, dont understand what PC is. Pushing the envelope or slowly boiling the frog is PC and is part of the agenda of the people who invented PC such as Theodor Adorna and Max Horkheimer of the Frankfurt School of Marxism and critical theory (Critical of the West). The motivation is to degrade Western Art, music, society and culture. Their agenda is why we went from Mozart to Madonna and from Michaelangelo to Marcel Duchamp.

It just shows how tragic new Zealand TV journalism is! I can't believe they actually think it should be censored... May be they should sit down and watch all the animated movies and listen to the sexual references there!

I can't believe Downstage is not getting on the offensive on this! Journalism is NOT about twisting stories and presenting them on TV!

TVNZ sucks!

It's a circus show with one (just one) swear word in it.

God forbid we should let our children go to the circus!

Where is this "abyss of immorality" and "endless pool of depravity"? And where do I sign up?

This is disgusting. Let kids be kids and stop filling their minds with images and concepts they are not equipped to deal with. Rather than refer to the sad fact that many kids are presented with other images etc that are worse, how about doing something about. Why not start here.

I was presented with images inappropriate to my age when I was a child, and they "literally" destroyed my early development.

Snap out of it you fools.

So chrissy #39 what else do you consider normal? Is swearing not normal? is an orgasm not normal? Get a grip!!, in some communities going bowling is probably considered the most abnormal thing in the world!!

@ Robyn #35

Totally agree about "Like a Virgin"!!! And remember Right Said Fred "I'm too sexy", Salt n Pepa's "Let's talk about sex"?? All of those songs came out when I was less than 10 years old.

Have the rest of you forgot the first time you learned a swear word and the first time you learned what sex is?

Have a single one of you whinging morons even bothered to do the tiniest bit of research into this play? It's called "An Adagio Christmas" and apart from the play element, it has loads of acrobatics and circus elements. Sounds awesome and good on both CYFS and Downstage for organising this for the kids.
