The lower North Island was rocked by an earthquake this morning.
The short shake, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, struck at 11.09am, GNS Science reported.
It was centred off the lower North Island coast, 30km northwest of Otaki and 80km north of Wellington, at a depth of 50km.
The tremor was felt throughout the region.
Kapiti Coast resident Doug Sail said it was "a good wee shake in Otaihanga".
"There was quite a loud 'bang' as it hit... I thought there had been collision on the railway line over the back fence... but then the ground kept shaking for another 5 - 10 seconds."
