Newstalk ZB has told popular Christchurch host Ali Jones she will host her last show next Friday.
The Radio Network confirmed today hers is one of four positions in Christchurch being disestablished "as a result of the effects of the economic environment on business trading".
Those also affected are news presenter John Dunne, producer Kathleen Smitheram, and Saturday Scoreboard host Malcolm Ellis.
The morning show hosted by Leighton Smith will replace Jones's show from January 25.
John Dunne will finish his news reading role on Friday, December 18.
In the New Year the duties will be carried out by a newly appointed joint journalist-newsreader.
Saturday Scoreboard will continue to feature hourly local updates and results as part of the programme presented by national host Willie Los'e.
"We will remain focused, however, on delivering the same quality local news coverage and retaining as much local flavour as possible," said TRN Christchurch general manager Andrew Britt.
"The disestablishment of the roles is definitely no reflection on the affected staff," TRN General Manager Bill Francis said. "In the current economic climate we have just had to make adjustments.
Last year Newstalk ZB axed its Christchurch breakfast show.

What a bunch of crybabies you Cantabs are.
If you've ever listened to Leighton's show, you would know that he is much more internationally focused than Auckland-focused.
Maybe it's time for Cantabrians to wake up from of their parochial hell and join the rest of us in the 21st Century.
That's it for me, certainly won't be listening to 3zb anymore. Are you serious, swapping Ali Jones for Leighton Smith. We may as well go back to bed as we'll all be asleep after ten minutes listening to Leighton.
So long and bye bye ZB I have been listening to you daily since the 60,s. Thats it, she's all over,I will listen elsewhere.I will listen to RDU where we will hear local news.
You may as well just switch 3ZB off not only am I not going to advertise on 3ZbB a group of us have agreed to question retailers if the advertise on Radio Auckland/3Zb and if they do we are not going to purchase from their store
Shame on you all at Z B for chopping what was the last part of Christchurch ,Mike Hosking only wants to know about Auckland and Leighton Smith puts us to sleep he is so boring ,So thats another regular listener gone .Good Luck to all our local hosts finding another station
4? omg
As long as they dont mess with ZB in Auckland then I really dont care.
PS Auckland doesnt need the South Island at all.
More dumbing down of NZ regional and local radio with locals replaced by even more Dorklanders. God help us. Ken Ellis amd John Dunne WERE Newstalk ZB for Canterbury and beyond. "We will remain focused, however, on delivering the same quality local news coverage and retaining as much local flavour as possible" Yeah Right, that would make a good Tui billboard. I hope John and Ali can do a George Balani and set up another station that will wipe the floor with the Dorkland orginated crap. It has been a gradual and insidious process over the past few years. Time to hit back Cantabrians and indeed all South Islanders. Just boycott the whole rotten TRN dollar oriented system and let them see what real market forces are like. "Listener Power" Mainland style.
i actually have to thank 3zb for all the changes they have made down here in CHCH. i had to use pliers to change my radio tuner cos it had been tuned to zb for so long. but if they hadnt killed off the local show and put on some chap called mike hoskin , i never would have discovered marcus lush and what a truly excellent station radio live is to listen to. so thanks zb , marcus has to be the best host in the country by a country mile

As usual impersonal national coverage on radio (ala TV) with no local focus. It's not parochialism we want , it's regional diversity. I just found out about this axing and it stinks! Can we have some IN DEPTH journalism which stretches our minds? Rusty
