Two earthquakes have struck off the coast of the lower North Island today, including a 5.1 magnitude earthquake near Otaki.
A 4.1 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of the lower North Island this afternoon.
The quake, which was recorded at 3.54pm, was 40km deep and 40km north west of Otaki, in the Wanganui Basin, GNS Science said.
It was felt in Wellington, Lower Hutt and likely also on the Kapiti Coast.
Just after 11am today a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck at 50km deep and 30km north west of Otaki.
It follows an earthquake measuring 5.1 which also struck off the Kapiti Coast yesterday and was widely felt across Wellington, Kapiti Coast and southern Taranaki areas.
