Church's bedroom billboard defaced after 5 hours
A mischievous bedroom billboard mocking the Christian conception story has been defaced just over five hours after it was erected by a church in downtown Auckland.
The controversial billboard, erected by St Matthew-in-the-City Church about 11am today, showed Joseph looking down dejectedly and Mary looking sad. Underneath is a caption, "Poor Joseph. God is a hard act to follow."
The image, which the church said was put up to stir debate about the real meaning of Christmas, was seen defaced with brown paint shortly after 4pm.
"When I drove by at 3.30pm it was fine," St Matthew-in-the-City spokesman Clay Nelson told NZPA.
He said a television cameraman had captured footage of the vandalism and it was likely to be handed to police and a complaint laid.
"We had asked some of the street people to keep an eye on it overnight but it's taken even less time than that," Mr Nelson said.
"We knew this would create a little bit of a fuss but I had no idea that my co-religionists had no sense of humour."
Mr Nelson said the billboard had clearly succeeded in sparking debate, judging by publicity and the number of messages the church had received.
"This is going to be a topic of conversation on dinner tables around the world," he said.
"Getting people to talk about Christmas in real ways is maybe worth a little bit of paint."
He said the church would find a way to get the original image back on the billboard.
Archdeacon Glynn Cardy had said the concept was to get people to think what Christmas was all about.
"Is it about a spiritual male God sending down sperm so a child would be born, or is it about the power of love in our midst as seen in Jesus?"
He said the true importance of Christmas "is in the radical hospitality Jesus offered to the poor, the despised, women, children, and the sick, and says: 'this is the essence of God'. His death was a consequence of the offensive nature of that hospitality and his resurrection a symbolic vindication".
Archdeacon Cardy said the church had asked an advertising agency to come up with a few ideas in November, and that the billboard they chose wasn't the most radical one offered up to them.
"One of the options we turned down had a sperm coming down with the words 'Joy To The World'."
Catholic Church spokeswoman Lyndsay Freer had described the image as inappropriate and disrespectful, while traditional values group Family First said it was wrong to confront children and families with the image.
Last week a campaign by New Zealand Atheist Bus Campaign raised $20,000 in public donations to fund bus ads which read "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life".
Those ads created a storm when they ran on the London Underground and British buses this year. Similar ads have run in the United States, Canada, Italy, Spain, Australia, Finland and Germany.

Although I found the poster humorous myself, I can't help but be shocked at the double standard here. Making light of the virgin birth of Christ: Freedom of speech. Depicting Mohammad in a cartoon as a terrorist with a bomb in his turban: International crime punishable by death.
They say this is offensive, but having trucks park next to busy streets in front of abortion clinics displaying horrible images of mutilated baby fetuses is ok? There is a strange paradox in this whole thing. Where does the just images of the abortion crusaders and pro marriage gay bashers cross the lines of obscene?
It might be a bit offensive to believers, but Over all, people need to stop getting so offended when ever someone contradicts or "makes fun" or their believes, I mean thats part of been american, freedom of speech is everyones rights, doesn't matter how right or wrong his or hers arguments are.. otherwise we might end up like religious extremists in the mid east.. and I also think that corporations need to stop been so incredible aggresive, They would try anything in order of selling their products. Corporations more and more are dictating to people how to think, talk act, eat, drink and what to believe in, they are drastically changing our society and Im afraid ain't for the best. but in the end, freedom of speech is everyones right.
Katie Crook - People DO degrade ALLAH. Another church erected a billboard that said "Islam is of the Devil", printed up T-shirts with the same slogan, and sent kids wearing them to public schools, where Muslim children also attended. And the ACLU is defending the students right to wear T-shirts that say "Islam is of the Devil".
what ever may people do to get christ and mother mary far away from us, by doing this nonsense, still we will continue in beliving in christ and we know that he loves us
Whether or not Mary was a virgin when she died is not the point. I am a fairly liberal person, but even I found a little discomfort in the depiction of the Holy Mother "in the sack"; it's kind of like thinking about your parents having sex, it creates a little discomfort.
On top of this, Mary was a faithful and loving wife. To infer that "she got it on with GOD" as opposed to a true immaculate conception and then would make Joseph feel dejected after he made love to her is offensive.

Yes Mary was a virgin when the angel came to her. and yes she had other children. But who said she was a virgin when she died? The point is, is that she WAS a virgin when the angel came to her. Get your facts right.
@brent #314 oooh! Wait a second buddy! You're saying that its a terrible thing to suggest that Mary had an orgasim during the conception of christ? That orgasisms (presumably invented by God to strengthen the bonds between 2 consenting loving adults) are somehow naughty and wicked? Either you agree with the underlying point of the billboard and think that the conception of christ wasnt about sex. Or you disagree, and want to believe that MARY DIDNT LIKE IT! Is that what you want to believe? really? because it says terrible things about you and even worse things about God. (who dosnt exist anyway so its all academic.)

That sounds right to me. While certainly Joseph and Mary made love with each other as married couples are wont to do, and presumably profoundly enjoyed the sexual expression of their love for each other, the usually occurring wonderful result, portraying their sexual love in this way is profoundly disrespectful of both Joseph and Mary but also of sexual love generally which should be utterly suffused with affection and emotional attachment. Sexuality devoid of love is an empty and ultimately despairing experience.
