A one-year-old boy is seriously injured after he was run over by a vehicle reversing out of a driveway in Northland.

The accident happened this afternoon in the small rural town on Kaikohe.

The child was flown to Starship Hospital in Auckland with serious injuries.

Police inquiries are continuing.

The accident follows three recent cases of small children being run over in driveways.

A two-year-old girl was killed when her father accidentally ran over her in the driveway of their Waikato home on November 2, two weeks after a similar incident in Hamilton.

Less than 24 hours later, a 21-month-old girl suffered serious head injuries after being accidentally run over by a family member in the driveway of a kohanga reo in Waihi.
