Two New Zealanders have been arrested in India, after allegedly being caught with cannabis.

They were arrested in Bhuntar, an area well-known for marijuana cultivation.

Authorities allege the New Zealanders were carrying 96 grams of cannabis, NewstalkZB reported.

India has strict drug laws, with penalties of up to 10 years jail for people caught with even a few grams of marijuana.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington said New Zealand's High Commission in New Delhi had been informed of the situation and had made contact with local authorities.

The New Zealand pair had not so far asked for assistance, but New Zealand officials were making efforts to talk to the individuals to see if they needed help.
