A Christchurch man who landed a job after a roadside plea says the "drastic" move turned his year around.

Bill Hunwick, 60, gained national attention in June by standing in Main North Rd with a sandwich board to advertise his availability for work. He had been made redundant from a recycling plant four months earlier.

The search ended with him accepting a packing position at Sockburn's Montana Bakery, across from his former workplace.

Hunwick said he was still enjoying his job at the bakery, where he worked from 6am to 2pm.

"It's a really full-on and busy job." He was thankful Montana bosses Phil and Daniel Folter responded to the plea.

"Standing on the corner that day with the board around my neck really paid off," he said. "I think there's work out there if you really want to look for it."

Laid-off workers needed to "swallow their pride", Hunwick said. "I think if you're keen enough to work, you've got to get out and do something."
