A man drowned while rescuing his young children after they got into trouble swimming at Glenbrook Beach, near Auckland.

The man raced to save his son, while a member of the public came to help of his daughter. After pulling the girl from the water, the passer-by returned to help the man, who by this time was underwater, but continued holding his son above his head.

Other people at the beach came to the aid of the stricken bathers, pulling them to shore, a police spokesman said.

However, once back on dry land, the man could not be revived through CPR and died, he said.
