A young baby ended up wedged under the front seat of a car which collided with a truck near Tolaga Bay, 56km north-east of Gisborne, last night.
Senior Sergeant Moera Brown said a woman, the front seat passenger in the car, died in the crash which happened just after 8.30pm at the intersection of Kaiaua Road and the east coast highway.
Ms Brown said neither the woman nor two children injured in the accident, a 2½-month-old baby and a three or four-year-old toddler, were wearing seatbelts. A man driving the car was also injured.
The young baby was found wedged under the front seat of the four-door sedan, she said.
The car's occupants had been at a local birthday party.
Ms Brown said a truck and trailer unit working on corn harvests in the area collided with the four-door car when it came out of Kaiaua Road.
The car travelled across to the wrong side of the road, and collided with with the truck while trying to correct to the right side of the road.
