Firefighters battled a blaze at a house in Whakatane early this morning.
Two crews from Whakatane and one from Edgecombe fought the fire, which broke out at 4.05am, after receiving multiple calls from neighbours.
The four-storey building was well alight when firefighters arrived at the scene but they controlled it quickly, Fire Service northern senior communicator Tania Matthews told NZPA.
Everyone in the house was accounted for, she added.
A fire safety officer is still at the scene investigating the cause.
