Traffic on the Southern Motorway is heavily congested in both directions after traffic lights failed on major roads in Manukau.
Police said that the lights went out in the eastern suburbs of Manukau at 4.30pm.
Te Irirangi Road, Chappell Road, Ti Rakau Road, Highbrook Drive and other major arterial routes were left without traffic lights.
Police are on points duty at some of the major intersections.
Traffic appears to be flowing slowly but drivers are advised to avoid the area if they can.
