Firefighters are working to contain two large forest fires in drought-stricken Northland.
Kaipara District Council rural fire Officer Fiona Vessey says the blazes, one in Pouto on Northland's west coast and the other in Kaimaumau in the Far North had been stretching services.
Fire crews were alerted to the fires at midday today.
Around 30 hectares of forest was still alight at the Pouto fire at around 10.30pm and a single crew and helicopter were monitoring it.
The fire had been contained by a fire break but firefighters said a shift in wind conditions could change the situation.
The crew were also protecting properties and the fire's outer perimeter.
“There is a prohibited fire season in Northland and this is a great reminder for people to take care as it is still very dry out there, despite some rain recently,” Ms Vassey said
