A Lincoln University lecturer killed in a car crash at Belfast on Friday was at the wrong place at the wrong time, her family says.

Lyn Boddington, 50, died on Friday afternoon in a crash at the intersection of Main North Rd and Dickies Rd.

She died at the scene after her red Daihatsu collided with a minivan full of girls from Amberley School.

The young teenagers suffered minor injuries.

Boddington's younger brother, Bill Boddington, said yesterday his sister was the family's "rock" and "very much the big sister".

She had two sons, Alistair and Owen.

"She really just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time," Bill Boddington said.

"We're grieving her loss and our sympathies also go out to the driver of the van because he really was in the wrong place at the wrong time, too."

Lyn Boddington had been a lecturer in business management at Lincoln University since 2001.

Vice-Chancellor Roger Field said she had supported staff rights with integrity as co-president of the university's branch of the Tertiary Education Union.

"She was well-respected by her students and was always prepared to make that extra contribution in support of their future success."

Police were seeking the driver of a charcoal or dark-coloured station wagon that crossed the intersection at the time of the collision. Detective Sergeant Darren Folau said the police wanted to speak to the man who was driving.

"The car was involved to some degree but we don't know to what degree," he said.

The car had entered the intersection from Chaneys, on the eastern side of Main North Rd.
