The MetService has issued a severe weather warning for Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty ahead of thunderstorms and possible flooding later today.

Heavy showers are forecast to develop over the Gisborne Ranges this afternoon and may turn thundery and severe in northeast Gisborne, especially north and east of Raukumara Forest Park.

Up to 30mm of rain an hour could fall from late afternoon through to mid-evening.

The rainfall could cause surface or flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas such as streams, rivers and valleys, and could also lead to slips.

People in and about riverbeds downstream should exercise caution in case of flash flooding, the MetService said.
