South Island shaken by quakes

Southland was shaken by a magnitude 4.0 earthquake this afternoon.

GNS Science said the quake which struck at 3.14pm was centred 60km west of Te Anau, 125km southwest of Milford, at a depth of 60km.

Nine minutes earlier a 4.6 magnitude quake struck Canterbury.

The quake was located 30km northeast of Kaikoura at a depth of 15km and would have been felt in Blenheim and Wellington.
