Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws has welcomed a court decision to uphold the city's anti-gang patch law.

Wanganui District Council Prohibition of Gang Insignia Act prohibits the display of gang insignia in specific places.

The Hells Angels gang last year sought to challenge the law after member Bryan Vincent Moore was convicted for wearing a "Hells Angels MC Hastings" T-shirt in the central city.

In a decision released by Wanganui District Court today, Judge Peter Butler said the court did not have jurisdiction to hear a challenge over the validity of the law.

Mr Laws said the decision was "one up for the good guys".

"The Wanganui community wanted this law, Parliament obliged, and now the courts have upheld it," he said.

The council was also seeking a court order to dismantle local Hells Angels fortifications.
