Witnesses to a fatal road accident near the Northland town of Kerikeri earlier this week say a woman died when she was hit by a very drunk driver.
Katherine Fiona Kennedy, 46, died when her car and a Nissan Navara collided about 8am about 12km south of Kerikeri on Wednesday.
Witnesses said the driver of the Nissan was extremely drunk, the New Zealand Herald reported.
The dead woman's brother Chris Kennedy, 43, said he had now lost his sister and his mother in suspected drink-driving crashes. His mother, Eleanor, died in a head-on crash in 1988.
The Nissan apparently crossed the centre line and Ms Kennedy was cut free by firefighters. She died several hours later in Whangarei Hospital.
The man, 49, thought to be the driver of the Nissan was taken to hospital with serious spine and chest injuries.
Kerikeri police said they were still waiting for the results of blood tests.
