Northbound traffic on the southern motorway is being diverted off at Market Road in Auckland as contractors clear an estimated two tons of watermelons from across all three lanes.

No one was injured when a three ton truck rolled, south of the New Market viaduct, just before 6.00am.

Police estimate that it will take at least another thirty minutes for diggers and sweepers to shift the mess and hose down the road.

At present there is a small tailback however this may grow as traffic levels increase.

Traffic light phasing has been altered on Great South Road to Gillies Ave to assist traffic flow.
