Gemma Corin from Taupo has just arrived back from Manchester where she presented a paper on sexuality in comics.

The 22-year-old masters student delivered a speech to the Manchester Metropolitan University.

Corin is has been concentrating on animation and comics for her studies in the screen and media department of Waikato University.

She says it was an awesome experience for her as she was around much bigger learning institutions, lots with whole departments dedicated to animation.

Corin says that it was really fun and gave her lots of ideas, hearing others presentations.

It was also a great chance to network and I made lots of contacts over their now from fellow students, tutors and even people who make programmes and contacts at the BBC.

She tried to make the most of her time there, she says.

Her talk was on sexuality in comics, a topic which interested her after she was given a copy of a young avengers comic which features outwardly homosexual characters.

It was a subject that combined her love of comics and animation and genuinely interested her.

Also it was a big challenge, she says.

Corin was only able to go and accept the invitation after the RSA generously donated money for her to go and attend.

I just want to thank them for their help and support, she says. Next year upon completing her masters Corin will work towards getting an idea for a TV series that she has been working on funded.
