Wellington Airport has backed down from a proposal to erect a "Wellywood" sign and is asking the public for alternative ideas.

The airport announced on March 8 that it would put a 28m-wide by 3.5m-high sign on steep hillside land it owns next to the Miramar cutting in June.

The sign, which had been given resource consent by Wellington City Council, was designed to copy the iconic Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, right down to the staggered lettering.

But opposition from the public - and a possible legal stoush after Hollywood lawyers said it would be a trademark violation - led to a change of plans.

Wellington Airport chief executive Steve Fitzgerald today invited alternative ideas for "a sign celebrating the global success of Wellington's film industry" to be submitted via Facebook.

"There is general agreement that the sign is a good idea and there is a healthy discussion around various design ideas. We are listening and we would like to hear those ideas," he said.

"Our objectives are for the sign to say 'Wellington', 'film' and 'global'. We think 'WELLYWOOD' does that and so do many others.

"However, after discussing the issue with Mayor Kerry Prendergast we have decided to see if there is a better way of meeting these objectives. She suggested that we listen to some alternative ideas, given the strength of opinion on it, and we're happy to do that."

Suggestions could be made on the Wellington International Airport Facebook page.

@Bob #41 - Agree totally with Michelle #88 - New Zealand needs more rugby obsession like it needs another Camp David. There's more to us than chasing a ball around a paddock.

@Bob #39... oh yea, let's do another rugby thing. is that all we have to be known by? glad they kicked the wellywood idea because it was lame-o but it was refreshing to have something to do with film and not SPORT!

Here's an idea: why not put the money towards reinstating the 15 minutes free usage of the car park at the airport for pickups? The current situation is a shabby money-grab.

Hey Bob, are you serious when you say wellington home of rugby...naaah. you can't be. Reckon you might have been walking into the wind and sleet for too long if you are

Thank goodness enough people complained and the airport and council listened. It was such a stupid, copy cat idea.

I think putting a sign or something up is fun and funky, tho maybe when there is a bit more money floating around.

Not sure why it has to be just about film, but for this, I think a big Weta or something about middle earth would be quite good.

I'd also like to seem them get rid of the gorse and get some native trees up there as well.

Good decision to stop and think again.

By the way the original proposal wasn't a Council decision. Councillors only found out about it when it turned up on the front page of the newspaper, and I don't think many of us (councillors) were at all impressed by either the process or having probably the biggest sign in Wellington pseudo-renaming our city, without any notification - including through the consent process. I'm 100% sure we can find a much much better way of celebrating the film industry. Personnally I think an active museum of film would be a massive attraction.

So how much would Wellington airport pay some one professional to come up with a name. Im thinking a few free frights around New Zealand for the slogan they choose for the person whos slogan they use. Hey nothing is free these days

How about putting the money towards a longer runway. Perhaps then we might get a few more international flights into Wellington instead of directing so many of our visitors through Auckland.
