The armed offenders squad was called out early this morning after a man was assaulted at a property in the Otara suburb of South Auckland.
Police and ambulance were called to the house where several men were reported to have smashed their way into the property, Northern Communications duty operations commander Inspector Lou Alofa said.
"The offenders assaulted a male occupant before decamping through the rear of the property."
It was believed the offenders were in possession of what appeared to be a sawn off double-barrelled shotgun.
"No shots were fired and it is unclear as to whether the shotgun or any other weapon was used in the commission of the assault," Mr Alofa said.
Cordons had been set up around Nola Crescent and the nearby streets.
Inquiries were continuing.
