Double road fatality in Kihikihi
Relevant offers
Two people are dead after the car they were travelling in apparently failed to give way at a Waikato intersection, colliding with another car and throwing its occupants onto the road.
The cars collided at the intersection of Rolleston St and Arapuni Road in Kihikihi, 30km south of Hamilton, about 7pm.
Waikato Road Policing Manager Inspector Leo Tooman said it was too early to say what caused the crash but initial indications were that the driver of a car travelling from Rolleston failed to stop or give way.
The four people on board were thrown from the car when it rolled, and two men died at the scene.
The two others were taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.
The driver of the other car had to be freed by firefighters and was taken to Waikato Hospital, also in a serious condition.
"While it's still to early to determine the definite cause of the crash we're asking for people to drive to the conditions - that's not just climatic but includes watching your speed and sticking to the road rules by giving way, buckling in and not driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol," Mr Tooman said.
The Waikato serious crash unit was investigating and the deaths were referred to the coroner.
