A man celebrating his 17th birthday and his 16-year-old friend were busted on a stolen motorbike after a brief police chase near Napier.

Police spotted the pair driving a Honda XR200 near Taradale at around 2pm yesterday.

The 16-year-old, who was in control of the bike, allegedly failed to stop for police and took off down the Napier-Hastings expressway.

Police abandoned the pursuit when the bike did a u-turn and just missed other traffic.

The pair rode their bike down Meeanee Road, where they hit a car.

They were thrown from the bike, but got back on board.

Napier senior sergeant Eion Evans said police found them soon after at Maraenui Park in Napier.

The pair will appear in court today.

The 17-year-old is charged with unlawfully being on a stolen bike.

The 16-year-old, who will appear in Youth Court, is charged with unlawfully taking a bike, dangerous driving andfailing to stop.

Mr Evans said police found two other stolen motorbikes during their inquiries.

Further charges were likely, he said.
