A Te Puke man had a narrow escape early this morning after an altruistic gesture by passing motorists went awry.

Senior Sergeant Stu Graham told NZPA the 34-year-old's car had aquaplaned off a wet State Highway 2 at Whakamarama, west of Tauranga, at about 5am and into a ditch.

"Some people who have been driving past have pulled the car out of the ditch and it's been sitting in the road as a truck came down."

The truck ploughed into the car before crashing off the road and down a bank.

"They (attending officers) described it as having flattened the car."

St John Ambulance team manager Simon Campbell told the Bay of Plenty Times the car driver may have a dislocated shoulder after being clipped by the truck as he went to get back into his car.

The truck driver, a 65-year-old Maketu man, suffered severe injuries including chest trauma and a fractured clavicle.
