One dead after car hits bridge

LATEST: A 46-year-old man who died when his car hit a bridge in the Far North was probably not wearing a seat belt, police say.
The man, who has yet to be named, slammed into the bridge near Peria, east of Kaitaia, this morning.
Attempts to resuscitate him failed and he died at the scene.
Police said it was too soon to say if the man was affected by drugs or alcohol.
