A toddler is dead after a driveway accident in the south Auckland suburb of Otara.
Police are investigating after the boy, thought to be aged about two years, was hit by a vehicle about 1.20pm.
The boy was taken to hospital by ambulance but was confirmed dead.
His name has not yet been released.
Inspector Matt Rogers from the police Northern Communications Centre said police were conducting a thorough investigation to establish exactly what happened. They remained at the scene until 4.20pm.
"My understanding is that it was in a driveway near the end of a cul de sac."
Mr Rogers said the tragedy showed how vigilant people needed to be if they were using vehicles near children.
"It's a tragedy, and people need to be mindful about children when backing out of driveways", he said.
Mr Rogers said he could not confirm the relationship between the child and the person driving the vehicle.
A 22 month-old child died on July 25 in Weymouth, south Auckland, when struck by a car driven by a family member.
