Hit and run hunt after dying man found

Police are hunting a hit-and-run driver after a man was found dying on a Northland road last night.
The man 45-year-old victim was discovered beside State Highway 12 near the rural settlement of Whirinaki, 45km west of Kaikohe, about 8.45pm.
Police said that he had suffered significant head trauma. He died a short time later despite efforts to by the public and paramedics to save him.
Whilst no vehicle was seen, it was believed the injuries and scene were consistent with the deceased having been struck by a motorist.
Police said the dead man's name had not yet been released as some members of his family were still to be contacted.
An autopsy would be carried out on Thursday.
They appealed to anyone who may have seen the accident or have any other information to come forward.
