The Queen has wished Cantabrians well after Saturday's devastating earthquake.
"The Queen has today asked the New Zealand prime minister to send her good wishes to those affected by, and helping with, the aftermath of Saturday's earthquake in Christchurch," a Buckingham Palace spokesman said overnight.
Her comments come after Prime Minister John Key yesterday called off a trip to Europe in which he and his wife Bronagh were to spend the weekend with the Queen at Balmoral in Scotland.
Mr Key was also due to travel to London to meet British Prime Minister David Cameron and to Paris where he would meet French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Prime Minister Francois Fillon.
He was today visiting quake-hit areas with other senior government ministers.
It was Mr Key's second trip to the region after the magnitude 7.1 earthquake, having visited Christchurch on the day of the quake.
