Volunteer Searchers from Taupo and Turangi have rescued a sick 15 year-old boy this evening from Pureora Forest Park.
He was one of a dozen boys with an instructor from the Tihoi Venture School on a two day navigation exercise in the forest, Senior Constable Barry Shepherd said tonight.
The boy became unwell this morning and by 1pm the group made a call for help.
Police, St John Ambulance and LandSAR volunteers walked into the bush and carried him out by stretcher because heavy rain and low cloud made it impossible to evacuate by helicopter.
The schoolboys and their instructor had carried him part way out when met by the rescuers at 5pm. The rescuers with the sick boy and all his companions reached the road end by 6pm.
The boy was treated by ambulance officers and returned to the Venture School, 30km from Lake Taupo, with his companions.
