They call themselves the "plastic boys" – and Kenyan double contortionists Lazalus Mwangi, 27, top, and Hassani Mohammed, 21, certainly can flex.

The pair are among the star performers in Cirque Mother Africa, a spectacular show on at Wellington's St James Theatre.

The circus features juggling, contortionists and high-wire acts as well as live music and dance.

Underlying the two-hour performance is the traditional music, rhythm and dance of Africa.

The circus features 40 artists from, among other countries, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and South Africa.

As well as "the plastic boys", there is an "Adagio act" from Tanzania, in which a couple display slow-motion movements by using leverage forces.

The second and final Wellington performance is tonight. The show moves on to quake-hit Christchurch, with performances at the Isaac Theatre Royal on September 28 and 29.
