Geyser erupts in central Wellington
A burst water main created a spectacular geyser in central Wellington today.
The burst pipe, on the corner of Victoria St near Manners Mall, shot water about 30 metres high into the air and blocked the path of traffic.
The stretch of road is the scene of extensive road works, where a pedestrian mall is being converted to carry local buses.
A fire services spokeswoman told NZPA that police, council and the fire service had all been at the scene, which was cordoned off but the water had now been contained.
Hundreds of people have gathered to watch.
James Chrystall said he hear a jack hammer just before the water erupted.
''That soon stopped and all this water spurted out.''
Water is still pouring out of the ground, however a digger driver has placed a bucket over the top to quell the flow.
Mark Cubey said via Twitter: "Massive watermains gusher cnr Manners/Victoria Sts. Fountainous! Serious traffic disruption."
